Press Release 1st February 2008
SwissQual, the independent Swiss network quality measurement company, is to carry out a subjective video experiment at the Mobile World Congress 2008 to examine the sensitivity of different people to various aspects of video quality. SwissQual has already carried out significant original research into the different types of degradation that video transmissions, including those transmitted or received on mobile phones, are subject to and the degree to which humans are sensitive to them.
Says Dr Jens Berger, SwissQual’s Head of Applied Research: “There are many ways in which a video might become degraded through transmission. Blockiness, tiling, jerkiness and loss of lip synch are just some of the mechanisms by which viewers can perceive quality as being “poor”. Our on-going research programme, including the experiment that we are running at the Mobile World Congress, is designed to understand more deeply how viewers react to these various video quality problems. This allows us, during the analysis of the transmitted signal, to identify the most significant factors as far as perceived delivered quality is concerned. These means that we are better able to advise operators on the best trade offs to make in the network.”
SwissQual invests heavily in fundamental research and has an ongoing programme looking at voice and video quality. The insights provided by this programme are used to help design a range of quality algorithms which are used by SwissQual and a number of other test and measurement companies.
About SwissQual SwissQual is an independent Swiss company specialising in the quality of service measurement and monitoring of fixed and mobile telecommunication networks. SwissQual offers a wide range of solutions to suit most needs including laboratory testing, radio network optimisation and benchmarking. It is also well known for its pioneering work in voice and video perceptual quality measures.
Founded in 2000, SwissQual today has more than 70 employees and serves more than 100 customers in 44 countries. In July 2007, after an 18 month period of ownership by Spirent Communications, SwissQual returned to private ownership. |
