SwissQual, the independent Swiss network quality measurement company, has entered the latest version of its SQuad algorithm into the ITU competition to select the next global standard for voice quality measurement. This new standard, with the working title P.OLQA, is designed for the latest voice transmission technologies including wide-band and super-wideband.
Dr Jens Berger, Head of SwissQual’s research department and the leader of ITU-T’s P.OLQA project said “Wideband mobile offers great advantage to operators in what is still the most important mobile application of all: voice. The technology promises much clearer conversations via mobile telephony. In traditional voice telephony, additional signal processing stages are also being used to improve quality. All this means that measurement techniques have to cope with a greater wider of range quality dimensions and a greater number of distortion phenomena. This situation has triggered the setup of a new ITU-T standard.”
The new SQuad has already been extensively tested with a wide range of human subjects in the laboratory. It has also been in use in the field for more than six months and shows excellent performance across all voice transmission technologies. The new SQuad has been fully integrated into the SwissQual range of systems. This means that SwissQual can offer a complete solution for all of an operator’s bearer technologies using common equipment, management systems and analysis software.
Jens Berger commented: “Wideband technology changes the quality measurement situation entirely. In order to deliver the promised enhanced quality, both handsets and network need to be compatible. There will be situations when wideband capable handsets make calls to non wideband handsets or to handsets registered on a non wideband capable network. So users will experience both “traditional” and wideband quality in daily practice. This means changes in the way that delivered quality is perceived and measured. The new SQuad provides a solution to all of these challenges.”
